Any day you don't need new fingers is counted as a good day in my book.    Progress is as progress does. Or, maybe, progress is progress. You are making progress and an overall improved Derek.   Good on you!

Hi all, I have been meaning to finish the build diary for Dalek Inky for a while as we've basically completed him. He is a little too clean right now, but hes been to a couple of spots in NZ now Armageddon Expo in Wellington, a drive around the streets at night, as well as a rave at the beach! I want to share some of the photos taken of him with the forum, I've been very busy with uni so I'll finish the diary when possible but for now here are some pictures :))    I forgot to include some of the photos from Armaggedon whoops! will add them now.

I'd say I'm finally happy with my NSD model.. but I'd be lying.. Regardless I've put way too much work into it to just keep all the renders to myself. https://www.artstation.com/artwork/5WmGOW

Got all the eye discs on and beautifully straight. Then I looked at them properly and realised they were too widely spaced. Bunched them up again and they are now wonky. Leaving it as a signature of my build. Derek, the wonky dalek. While I wait for the LEDs to be delivered I have been playing that awful critical path game in my mind - I put the LEDS through the swivel first, right, then pass the line through the slot in the dome, then into the tube, then through into the eye itself. It finally occurred to me today that the swivel should go into the slot from the front if I haven't put the pivot pin* in yet, and I can assemble the whole stalk before fitting it. D'oh!   I had this great plan to smooth out the inside of the dome so the rotation ring would fit. I need to do that because I'm using a 3d printed dome that designed to be a casting buck, not an actual dome, and it's not related to the rotation ring from @elembivos's files. I'm not going to tell you what that plan was because A: It didn't work and B: It was stupidly irresponsible, even if it had worked, which it didn't. Plan D went into effect (Yes, the failed plan was plan A, and the other plans in between were even stupider and less effective. It's been quite a morning!) and I cut the rotation ring down to fit the dome, instead of vice-versa. Did you know that when you cut 3d printed materials with a power tool like a jigsaw, the heat from the friction melts the material back together as the saw passes? So you then have to use a Stanley knife to cut away the piece you just cut away. I'm doing all this work and a little voice in the back of my mind is saying "You know this rotation ring is designed to work with a Lazy Susan, don't you? You don't have a Lazy Susan, do you?" That reminds me, have to talk to the doctor about stronger medication.   Anyway, look, the dome now sits on top of the old neck cage: It even rotates, in a rumbly, wobbly way. I have some extra...uh...uh...Can't remember what I call the things this dome rotates on. They're ballbearings in plastic cups, basically. If you haven't read all the way back through my build diary, I got them from a glove that you're supposed to use for massage. If you can't picture that, be glad, you are making good choices in life. Anyway, they get mounted on the rim of the dome on the inside, to prevent it wobbling from side to side. Mostly.   Next, whenever the next opportunity for daleking appears, I have to finish surface work on the dome. Pretty sure that means "Giving up on sanding and just putting three more coats of gold and two coats of sealant." Once I have the dome painting done, I can work on fitting the eye, and once that is in place I can finally get to my revolutionary Handle (TM) which should allow the operator to rotate the dome, light the ears and the eye, and raise and lower the eye, all from the same device! I'm not tremendously optimistic, but today's work involved removing the ballbearings from the old dome, so there's no going back now. Until this dome is finished, Derek can't make any appearances!       *Obviously, I am making up terms as I go. It's not a pivot pin, it's a big nail with the head cut off. And THAT should have been easy, but I still don't own a vise, and the smallest clamp I own used to hold bottles up on the optics at the back of a bar. All of which means it took five minutes and three resets to get the head off. Also, I should probably get a new blade for my hacksaw.
