Woodhorn is a huge site with the use of a few of their buildings for various activities.
We are now in our third year holding an event at Woodhorn. In 2010 we had 1200 visitors, in 2011 we had about 900. This is with our local Daleks with our little Invasion, but with so much interest we can't keep showing the same old Daleks year in and year out so we're throwing it out to the region and beyond. This year we're hoping we'll get visitors from far and wide from various costume groups to come along and be a part of what should and has been in the past a FREE fun day for nearly 2000 visitors. Doctor Who, Star Wars, Star Trek and if you know the odd Alien and Predator that would also be great so if you've got something other than a Dalek and you want to show it off this is a great opportunity.
Anyway down to the details. So far we've got a few activities planned for visitors some are the usual events that everyone loves and some are new.
Treasure Hunt - To encourage interest in the museum itself we run a treasure hunt where the visitors need to investigate the historic site and encounter the resident aliens/daleks/troopers/cybermen/vampires to find out the answers to questions on sheets handed out throughout the day. We always love the kids faces when they have been forced by their dads to ask a dalek his favourite football team.
Raffle - Throughout the day we sell raffle tickets for the various donated prizes both scifi and cuddly. Plus Dalek rides for those interested.
Intergalactic Bazarre (Zocolo) - We've got a few dealers attending selling their scifi fantasy merch for all your collecting needs.
Cantina - We will be doing a little theming in the Cafe and offer Aunt Beru's blue milk and Gagh for our Klingon visitors, I'm hoping for grilled Kaled.
How to build a Dalek - Short talk and demo on how to build and be a Dalek.
How to be a stormtrooper - Same for the stormtroopers.
Audience with the .... - Daleks? Stormtroopers? This is always popular. We've had fun with this is the last two years.
SCI QI - In the past we've held quizzes for the kids, but I think this time we should so for an alien team thing. This year I'm planning a Star Wars vs Daleks. To finally sort out who the ultimate scifi knowledge masters. Two teams of stormtroopers vs Daleks/Cybermen in a Scifi showdown. In the same vain as Mock the Week or QI. For fun. I can't imagine who we'd have for a quizmaster.
We've got a while to go and the itinery for the day is slowly coming together. So if anyone has any ideas or activities we'd love to hear from you. We've got indoor and outdoor areas on site and it's a great opportunity to get involved.
The event is on the Woodhorn calendar and will be featured in literature sent out to libraries and regional centres come spring.
We're also expecting newspaper articles before and after the event for advertising and reporting as we've done in the past, and we're grateful to the staff at Woodhorn who let us organise a FREE (except for all the fundraising) and fun day. We've been raising money for an accessible carriage for the on site railway and it's been a struggle due to knock backs from the National Lottery and increasing council fees set upon the voluntary organisation running it. But they've now got the truck on site now and we're helping raise funds for the platform and canopy.
This is our third year running an event at Woodhorn and I'm hoping it'll be the biggest ever.
Food, drinks and changing facilities will be provided throughout the day. Plus you'll get entry to their Invasion exhibition.
So come on all you southerners, bring the family and make a day of it. What's not to love?!
