Shawcraft Mk1 Dalek Plans 3.4.1

About This File

The Mk1 Dalek design was originally covered in the 'Shawcraft Mk1, 2 &3' plans booklet (now obsolete).

The plans have now been split into three separate booklets for the Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 Daleks. This download is the booklet for the Mk1 version.

This split helps to present the variations in a more detailed and logical manner. A great deal of new information has come to light over the last few years, some of it measured directly from original props, some derived by painstaking use of CG modelling and some coming from rare high resolution images. Until now, much of this new data has remained unpublished or has only been available scattered across numerous discussions on the Project Dalek Forum. All this information has been gathered together for the first time and used to create this new set of plans, which represent a significant advance in classic Dalek accuracy.

If you intend to use these plans to build a Dalek, please post a Build Diary of your progress on the Forum. Giving something back helps to keep Project Dalek alive.

These plans are also available to buy as a full colour printed booklet. Click here for details.

What it the measurement. MM, cm or In

Response from the author:

As stated on page 3, in the introduction...

Units of measurement:

Another significant change is the switch from (decimal) inches to millimetres. The original props were most likely built using inches for the bulk of the measurements, which is why inches were adopted in the previous versions. Many Dalek parts seem to make better sense in inches. The hemispheres are 4”, for example, which is easier to handle than 101.6mm. However, millimetres offer an overall degree of accuracy that is difficult to achieve using decimal inches, without having fractions down to several decimal places. Because of this, millimetres have been used throughout the new plans, unless otherwise stated.

I'm honestly shocked at how good these plans are, they're so easy to read and understand.

No head scratching required to figure out..." where does that bit go"

Great clarity and.....proper old school plans...just how I like them 🥰

Here we have the extensively revamped Mk1 plans & where it all started!

Like John says these are the most accurate plans ever produced and I challenge the man or woman who thinks there's anything better!

Go on! get stuck in! ;)

Just started to look at thew plans. They are well written and the sketches are very good. I am not building full size, I am building scale models so it will be easy to scale the measurements down.

They are brilliant - I started my build using the original (Rev2) plans and these are much improved - notably around the gun box - I too find mm easier to manage than imperial as well - especially when doing calculations. Thanks for all the hard work that went into them. Outstanding.

I know that these plans represent years of work, by quite a few people, especially John. Using these plans, and photos of the 60s Daleks, you should be able to build a very convincing replica.

Excellent, clear, crisp, succinct drawings, plans and information!  I Printed out first copy in Black but will probably do a colour copy later on.

My only gripe is that there is no mention of the two rows of "offset" vertical hemispheres at the back of the Dalek prop...

This idiosyncrasy appeared on two of the original four Dalek props, also later Daleks and on ALL film Daleks

(I just wanted to add that I have always worked in inches and millimeters depending on what i am measuring)

Great to be on board chaps!!

Response from the author:

The first six TV Daleks did not have the misaligned hemispheres. Take a look at photos in our Gallery section. That's why the misalignment isn't illustrated.

Check out the movie dalek plans or the Mk3 plans (when building Dalek 7 only) for details of the misalignment.
