Post in The Mecanum Dalek
Dome time

I have been putting off starting the dome for a while  now , choosing to finish off some of the other bits and pieces first .
Made up the ring that attaches the Lazy Susan bearing to the neck. The ply ring is held on to each of the next struts with a small L bracket made from aluminium angle.

The dome support and drive ring will then fit on top of this.  Still playing with dome rotation options, but will use a small windscreen motor that I have lying around.  It should be OK to run this at 24 volts OK since the speed will be controlled through a speed controller and the duty cycle is pretty low.
Made up the  eye pivot from a couple of pieces of 18mm MDF.  Got rid of the end grain with wood filler.  I have some 6mm ty-wraps that are about 1mm thick so will cut these and glue them on form the ribbed effect.  The 22mm copper tube hole is drilled, but not sure what to do with the pivot .  I have on old invalid hoist motor with a crazy amount of torque which should be able to handle the eye stalk, so may just bolt the motor flange straight to the side of the eye pivot and see how that works.

Also sorted out the clamp arrangement for the gunned plunger arms.  Went for felt lined 45 degree routed clamps with wing nuts to apply the tension and dome nuts to hide the sharp ends  of the stud bar.  The angled blocks make sure that the clamping forces are along the length of the stud to stop the whole thing twisting.

Now I'm running out of bits to do so finally got down to the dome. I'm using the tried and tested rotation/plaster  method.  I read in one of the build diaries (sorry,  read so many I can't remember which one) that someone had come up with a rotary table and static scraper.  This is what I went for.

The base part has a riv-nut hammered tightly into a slightly undersize hole with the turn table sitting on a washer and second rivnut with the threads drilled out.  This drilled out nut is a nice sliding fit over the central studbaar.
Three pan head screws under the turntable match the height of the rivnut "bearing" and keep the turntable level.    The scraper then sits between two wooden clamps and is supported by the central stud bar.  It spins quite nicely so hopefully will do the trick
The rough dome shape is constructed from 25mm polystyrene insulation.  The layers of polystyrene are pinned together using 4" nails.  If I was going to do this again I would invest in a cheap hot wire tool. Using a hacksaw blade to shape the block makes one hell of a mess and the bits stick to everything.  Once the shape is good enough the first layer of plaster was applied and the dome spun until everything fitted under the spacer.    Its quite rough at the moment,  the next coat should smooth everything out a lot better I hope.

So thats it for just now,  will wait for this coat of plaster to go off over night and start on another coat in the morning.

Dalek Thompson Submachine Gun
3D print your own Dalek Thompson Submachine Gun.

I drew these up so that my spotter could easily be in costume as a recognizable character that wasn't restrictive or limited movement. Basically they just need to wear 1930's style clothing and carry the Thompson and it's done. Oddly I didn't 3D print my own version - it was made by hand but I subsequently made these files for others to use.

You'll need:
6x Barrel Tines
2x Magazine Side 1
I have each of the magazine faces mirrored on my model but I can't remember why now.
1x each of everything else

I allowed 1.75mm pin holes for joining all the parts together.

Any questions please ask.

Post in 3rd Movie Saucer Commander
Hello all,

Did a bit of work Friday but none over the weekend! Very nearly there now. Pretty much just dome lights, tentacle and weathering to do!

So the ball pivots and bolts arrived so I drilled the holes, sprayed and fitted those. You can see that it was quite cold and some of the paint on the claw arm has bloomed but as it’s going to be aged anyway I figured that doesn’t matter too much.

I also cut the claw arm tubes to length, sprayed and fitted them. I didn’t have a hole saw that was the right size compared to the gun so I modified it by cutting the end off, placing a smaller diameter tube inside and a larger one that it slides into on top of that. This was then glued flush into the gun ball. I damaged the gun rods a bit and then sprayed in the same matching silver as the rest of the Dalek.

It’s very exciting having a nearly finished “proper” Dalek!

Dalek Triple Sec - First Movie Dalek Drink Cabinet
I've made a full size first movie Dalek drink cabinet.
With thanks to the incredible builds on this website to keep me motivated.
All true to scale except the middle section is a little bit taller to fit the height of bottles.
I've always wanted a Dalek but wanted it to be useful, so it had a reason for being in the house apart from looking good.
Hope you all like it,
Carl

Twin Gun Dalek
After two NSD builds I thought I would have some fun and build a Dalek that's a bit more spacious and with more firepower. Bigger gun boxes are set into the chest section which is 75mm wider than spec, extra armour plates fitted to break up the shape. Cut down NSD bezels adorn the front and the armour slats are yet to befitted. A standard dome and neck rings should still fit OK but it will have a slight Sontaran look about it. The strip on the front of the skirt shows the extra width but the bumper is quite slim so the width for trundling is no different. Its made of ply and hardboard for the chest section which has lasted a number of years trundling and being strapped in vehicles for transport in my first builds. Painting the hardboard both sides makes it a lot stronger and its easy to bend. Cheap too!. Hoping to be trundling around April on with his older brother which was my first build in the South West. Will post more as things progress . Just need a cup holder for a medium Latte and a small shelf to store my Oggys pastie lunch on!!

Markduston's Daleks
Hi All
I joined the site a few years ago and downloaded the plans for my favourite 70's era Dalek. Since then I've worked intermittently on the project and at last have finally finished. I thought you might like to see my efforts.
OK, they are 1:5 scale models, but I am still pleased with how they came out. I have built a full-size, back in my college days 20 odd years ago, and although it was fun, boy was it difficult to live with in a small house(!), so it had to go in the end.
Anyway, here they are. Mostly fibreglass, with brass and aluminium tube and a bit of vac-formed plastic here and there. I couldn't resist doing some 'comin'-out- of-the-dark-to-get-you' shots, that used to send us kids in the 70's scuttling behind the sofa in terror. Hope you like them!

The Imperial Dalek Plans
Completely revised and updated, this is the first version of the Imperial Dalek plans to come out of beta. Now expanded to 20 pages, the latest version includes revised and updated dimensions and additional illustrations and details.

This booklet contains the plans for the Imperial Daleks featured in the 1988 story Remembrance Of The Daleks. The plans for the skirt section may also be used as a basis for construction the Special Weapons Dalek, from the same story.

The introduction and footnotes provide additional information on the construction methods employed on the original props. Essential reading for all Imperial Dalek builders and enthusiasts.

If you intend to use these plans to build a Dalek, please post a Build Diary of your progress on the Forum. Taking them without giving back to the community is considered very rude.

Full Set Of Hemis And Mounts
Hello. Open to offers I have a box of full size hemis of the xmas tree bauble type. They have been painted, undercoated and primed (in that order) from the inside. Most are fine but some have suffered paint on the outside and removal of same has left the surface a bit dull. They may buff up well I don`t know as I immediately lost interest in this type of hemi and went back to my first  love hemi-wise. Also provided are mounting plates which are squares of hardboard with discs of ply glued to them. Simply trim the mount to your desired size and shape, glue the hemi to it and when set glue the whole thing to your skirt from the inside.  Any reasonable offer accepted as these will go to junk soon otherwise.  Hazel
PS. Most of the lack of shine in the pictures is simply dust. Dalek building creates loads of the stuff!

Casting Movie Beakers
I've had a pair of original 1960s beakers, (as used on the movie Daleks) for some time now and I have been meaning to make a mould from one of them.
Finally I've got around to starting this project. Because this isn't a complete dalek build (at this point), I've decided to add this small project to the appendages section, where it seems to most logically fit and where most people looking for such information will most likely come across it.
My beakers are made from translucent yellow plastic, exactly like the ones on the saucer commander in the second movie. However, I want to go through the mould making process in order to try and create duplicates in different colours (naturally, translucent red and blue ones)...

St Nicholas School, Redhill, Surrey Fete Day 1972
This image was taken in St Nicholas School, Redhill, Surrey on their fete day in either 1976 or 1977. That's as much information as we could find out, but it's a pretty cool image showing two very battered Daleks!

Hope this image helps to further complete the jigsaw of Dalek history!

Cheers, Scott.

Post in Bec Weir's Imperial
Amazing results when you make your Imperial shoulder mould out of flexible polyurethane...

Well, here it is.

Took about 20 minutes to demould, which was mostly spent unbolting the 50+ nuts and bolts with an electric drill fitted with a socket driver. The overall finish is pretty good, with a few spots needing a bit of bogging and sanding (mostly sanding), after a good wash to get rid of the PVA release and the Rocket Release.

The gun box detail has a few spots missing. This is mainly caused by the gelcoat not fully filling the detail in the mould. I think for the next one (did I just say that?), I'll fill these details with a gelcoat, resin and choppies mix first, before gelcoating the rest of the mould.

Dalek Found In Scrapyard Looking For New Home
Edwin Hall Dalek in need of TLC...

I came across this Dalek in a scrapyard and remember sitting in it on Scarborough seafront in 1965.  Now looking sorry for itself and will be lost forever unless it finds someone to renovate it.

If interested contact me and I can give you more details.  I'm already building 2 Daleks and can't take any more on at the moment but seems a shame to let it rot away.

Post in Huxster2000's Dalek
This is it!

I finally got to work on the appendages,
a coat of primer.
I added some self adhesive eva foam to the smaller tubes of the plunger arm to provide some friction so that the arm wouldn't extended fully whn pointed downwards,
The plunger is holding its position in the second photo but can still be pulled out with realtice ease.
All parts painted and lacquered, I didn't bother painting the rods for the gun arm as I felt the bare aluminium blended in well enough with the paint. I glued them in with CT1 after the paint had dried.

The eye stalk fully assembled and mounted,

And last but not least, the completed dalek,

It only took 2 years! I can't believe it's finally finished!

Urban Spaceman's NSD
Since my last build  (http://www.projectdalek.com/index.php?/topic/4539-rays-nsd/)
the tools and technology available to Dalek builders has moved along phenomenally and I’ll be taking full advantage of the equipment I didn’t have in the past for the new build.

Despite the extra toys I don’t expect the build will be a quick one as I won’t be able to work on it at weekends, plus my other creative endeavours, which will be largely funding the new build, must come first.
