Full Scale Shawcraft Dalek Dome Model and Negative

The dome is based on the Version 3.1 Movie plans (so the eye slot is higher than other classic domes), though the negative and back half files are consistent with other classic domes dimentionally. You could just print two back halves if you do not want a movie dome and cut the eye slot yourself. I would advise you consult the dome dimentions in the Version 3.1 Movie plans and compare them against the dimentions of your own plans if you are building a different classic dome.

This is a 3D printable Dalek dome model that has a curved eye slot rather than a rectangle extruded one making it more accurate to the real thing (It took quite a while to figure out how to make a hole based on a curved measurement in CGI). The front and back halves are provided, but you will have to slice it up if the model is bigger than your printer's build volume. The skinny dome is half an inch (1.27cm) thick and the normal one is one inch (2.54cm) thick. There are lower poly and higher poly (HD) variants of most files. A negative of the dome is also included for you want to use however you wish.

    NSD Cowl

Here is a set of models for creating an NSD cowl. Jbourd was kind enough to gift me with a 3d model of a complete Dalek dome and cruel enough to ask if I could separate out the cowl. It took a while but I managed to remove the dome and leave the cowl intact. Of course it is far to big to fit on my build platform. So I tried cutting it in half vertically. Each piece could only fit my build space in a few orientations. And due to the size and nature of the parts, they all warped beyond use. I wasted nearly a kg of filament on failed attempts. I decided to split it into quarters. This allowed for smaller parts which would fit flat and any warp would be to the thickness. Thought I had it nailed, but the thickness was warped enough so that the towards the back of the cowl the opening was too small to fit the eyestalk pivot. So I added a shim to compensate.

I have been using 3d Builder which is included with Windows 10. It has issues. For whatever reason I was able to separate out and save three out of four quarter pieces but the fourth would not save no matter what I did. So instead I used Replicator to mirror the pieces along the X-axis. That is why only right side parts are included. You have to use your build software to mirror them for the left side parts.

I've included the full cowl model in case you want to slice and dice it on your own. I've included the shim I used and a long peg to use with it. I suggest building out the four main parts and see if you need it.

Also the bottom parts had an issue with one corner pulling loose from the build plate and warping the holes. So I put a throw away block next to that corner to hold it down.

I printed everything at 10% fill .2mm thickness. Use full support and raft for the main pieces but not pegs and shim.

One thing I did not expect but really like is that in producing the curves, the printer leaves a pattern which is similar to wood grain. This is another reason why I included parts for only one side. By mirroring the parts the grain pattern is symmetrical.

Here's some pics. You can see the grain effect.

    NSD Moflash lens

I truly believe the 3D printer is a Dalek builders best friend. Since the Moflash Lens is no longer available we can now print one. I used this file from Thingverse and it is quite acceptable. Below is the caveat for its use.

A close approximation of the Moflash lenses used for Dalek NSD dome lights. I do not have a real one, so attempted this for my own NSD.
Dimensioned to fit inside the housings described in the Project Dalek NSD plans.
Print in a transparent or semi-transparent material as desired.

    So what's this mean?
Remixing or Changing this Thing is allowed.
    Commercial use is not allowed.

Once again I did not create this file but I have used it and it needs to be available to PDF members.

Note: Above are the pictures I took during and after printing, first one is nearing the end of print and the second is print finished. The third one is with the filler removed while the last one is with a flashlight with weak batteries. all in all I prefer this look over the original Moflash unit, I like the silver finish and it glows nicely.. Once the light hits it their is an oddness about the silver glow that makes it far more Dalek worthy!

Enjoy, and with the discontinued production of these lenses take heart that we will have them forever now! Gone are the days of scrounging and pleading in back corners for obscure parts to make our obsession!

    NSD Gunbox Detail

I've done this in two layers to make the flat faces easier to sand (before sticking them together). I had trouble getting them to stay flat while printing, so ended up having to print them in halves to prevent lifting. I'd recommend painting them on both sides before screwing them on, to ensure they don't start curling up at the corners as time passes. I've noticed that's happened to some of the BBC Daleks.

I then used Mesh Mixer to cut it in to quarters that would fit on my CR-10 Max printer.

NOTE: I have not tried printing this (Yet), though all files are water tight, and Should print OK.

    NDP Neck Rings

I created these files for Orin - my NDP Dalek build.  All measurements were taken from the PDF plans.

You need to print 12 of each file. I used PLA with 1mm wall thickness and 10% fill, but I would advise to go thicker - maybe 1.5mm, as the parts will warp under direct sunlight. Alternatively, try using ABS, which is less sensitive to ambient temperature.

For assembly, start at the bottom with Layer 1, then build up as follows:  Layer 2 base, Layer 2, Layer 3 base, Layer 3, Layer 4 base, Layer 4.  I added some strength by offsetting each base layer so that the joints did not all align vertically.

Imperial Dalek 5 inch Model Kit

To make up for the fact that there is no sufficiently accurate 5 inch model Imperial Dalek, here is a small 3D printable model kit to create your own.
This was modelled in Blender, with FDM style 3D printing in mind (although if anyone makes a resin one, please let me know, I'd love to see how it turns out), and the parts have a tolerance of around 0.15mm to fit together.

Only the plunger and the shoulders require printing with support material, and I have provided a visual instruction booklet showing the basics of how to assemble the model.

    Shawcraft Eye V2

This file is for the Shawcraft version of the Eye and is Version 2 already, I normally install the eye on a 3/4 inch ABS threaded tube so version 1 has an opening to accept that setup. However, everyone has a different way of installing the eye to the eyestalk and I had this file altered to allow the builder a choice of what size hole they need. Though this file does have a pilot hole which is centered for you already. The picture you see is the Eye I do have installed on Nyder and I will only use this file from now on when I'm making a Shawcraft Dalek! No more magic 8 ball and a can of tomato soup with 10 pounds of Bondo!
Once again I need to Thank Philip McNulty for all his efforts in drawing up these parts for me and for all PDF members.
Their are two inserts for this Eye which will cover most years of Shawcraft Daleks included in this download.

    NDP Eye

Here are the eye model files that I created for Orin - my NDP dalek build.  All measurements were taken directly from the PDF plans.
You need to print one Front, one Rear, and eight Fins for the eye, and five Rings for the eye-stalk.  I printed everything using 1.5mm wall thickness and 15% fill.

Everything was assembled with friction fit.  No glue or screws.  The fins fit tightly into the body of the eye and hold everything together.

When assembling, I started by inserting the rear of all the fins into the rearmost point of the eye body, then folded them inward one at a time.  This works nicely because you can easily access any electronics that you install into the eye.  Just open out the fins from the front until the eye front drops out.

    Imperial Dalek Eyediscs

A relatively quick version of the Imperial Dalek eye discs. They are based on (A forum members- someone please help!) measurements from a few years ago. I haven't had a chance to test print these.

Included are all four discs as separate files as well as a combined download of all four. The discs are about 11mm or so apart, and have a 25/26 mm hole partially extruded on both sides of each disc, but not
the whole way through so you have a little choice of construction.

Please give me a shout if you have any issues with them.

  22. More information about "NSD Cowl Quadrants"

    Free

    NSD Cowl Quadrants

This is the NSD Cowl 1.0.0 By Macropod80, but split into 4 roughly equal sized quadrants which can be printed on printers with a much smaller build area. I created these splits for my Flashforge Adventurer 3 which only has 150x150x150 build area, and they print fine, and join together pretty well with nice tight seams. Someone more proficient at 3D modelling than I could perhaps improve these models by adding some alignment/reinforcing tabs along the joins to aid with accurate assembly and strengthen the joins in the assembled piece. In my case I joined the pieces with superglue and held them together by hand while the initial bond formed.

Whilst the seams are fairly tight & neat, they're not invisible, so the completed assembled cowl will still need filling, sanding & painting. The parts need to be printed with supports, which are not in these model files, you'll have to add them in your slicer.

I printed these in PLA with 0.2 layer height, and each quadrant is roughly a 16 hour print at the highest quality on my machine.

    Hope this helps someone!

I ended up modifying quite a lot of the pieces so they now all fit together and print really well. It's a great balance between detail and ease of construction. So I have no doubt that any member of Project Dalek would be able to assemble it. It's a great deal simpler than the NSD, which was more designed for me with other people being able to assemble it simply being an afterthought.
As such I've created an instruction manual for anyone interested in either putting the model together or simply seeing how it was designed.

I modeled the NSD dome in solidworks with the intention of breaking it up into parts small enough to 3d print and later on make a fibeglass mold from. The cone near the eye cutout will help when an air valve is bolted onto the fiberglass mold. This air valve will enable easy mold release.
